Who can apply
Children born between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2019 can start at a junior school in September 2026. You’ll need to apply to us by 31 October 2025 if you want your child to attend a junior school.
What is a junior school?
In Stockport there are 5 junior schools:
- Banks Lane Junior School
- Cheadle Catholic Junior School
- Great Moor Junior School
- Hursthead Junior School
- Nevill Road Junior School
A junior school is different to a primary school. At a primary school children usually start in reception and stay until the end of year 6. At a junior school children start in year 3, after finishing at an infant school.
Infant and junior schools are completely separate schools with their own headteacher, staff, buildings and governing bodies. This means your child may attend 2 different schools during their primary education.
You must apply for your child to enter a junior school
Children do not automatically transfer from an infant school into the associated junior school. If your child is currently in year 2 at an infant school, you must apply for your child to enter year 3 at the associated junior school.
If your child is in year 2 at a primary school, you do not need to apply to enter year 3 at the same school. However, you can still apply to transfer to a junior school if you wish.
