Travelling in Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester is made up of 10 towns and cities in North West England:
- Bolton
- Bury
- Oldham
- Manchester
- Rochdale
- Salford
- Stockport
- Tameside
- Trafford
- Wigan
Greater Manchester has a large, well-connected transport network. There are different ways to get around the region including by tram, bus or train. There are also good cycling and walking links.

Concessions and discounts
People arriving from the Ukraine, living with a host family or relative in Greater Manchester, could be entitled to a concession or discount.
Children
Children under 5 travel free on buses, trains and trams in Greater Manchester. When they reach the age of 5 they must pay the child fare.
Young people
Young people between the ages of 5 and 16 will need an igo card to buy child tickets on buses and trams. An igo card costs £10 and lasts until 31 August after you are 16.
To be eligible for an igo card, you must be:
- living in Greater Manchester
- between the age of 5 and 16

Our Pass
For young people aged between 16 and 18, Our Pass provides free travel on local bus services across Greater Manchester.
Young people can also buy off-peak one day and weekend travel cards for the tram at half adult prices.
To be eligible for an Our Pass you need to be:
- living in Greater Manchester
- between the age of 16 and 18
Older people
Older people may be eligible for a pass that provides free travel on all buses within Greater Manchester between 9:30am and midnight, Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and on public holidays.
You can also choose to pay £10 to add trams and trains to your pass. This gives you unlimited off-peak travel on trams and trains within Greater Manchester for one year. You can travel between 9:30am and midnight, Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and on public holidays.
To be eligible for a travel pass for older people from TfGM you must be:
- aged 66 or over
- living in Greater Manchester
If you live outside Greater Manchester, you can apply for a pass in your own area but you cannot add tram and train travel within Greater Manchester to passes issued by other areas.
Disabled people
If you're disabled, you could be eligible for a pass that gives you free and low cost travel in Greater Manchester and the rest of England under the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme. Depending on your disability, you could qualify for either a travel pass for disabled people or a travel plus pass for disabled people.

You'll need to provide information about:
- the scheme you're applying for
- the address you're living at in Greater Manchester
- if you're part of the Homes for Ukraine Scheme, or staying with a relative
