What you can do to prepare for a flood

Before you buy or rent a property

Before you buy or rent a house, you should consider the risk of flooding to your new home. You can check if the property is in a flood risk area on The Flood Hub.

Create your personal plan and kit bag

Making a personal plan and kit bad will help you if your property floods and you need to evacuate. The plan and kit bag could include the following:

  • emergency contacts list
  • medication
  • key documents and a list of useful numbers including your insurance details and policy number
  • toiletries
  • food
  • a torch
  • clothing
  • bottled water

Visit The Flood Hub to find out how to:

Your home

  • know how to turn your gas, electricity and water supplies off
  • think about items of personal value and move them now
  • keep your drains and gutters clear of leaves to help prevent blockages and localised flooding when it rains heavily
  • report serious drainage problems

Sandbags

We do not provide sandbags for residents. If you're in an area at risk of flooding, we strongly advise you to make your own preparations in advance to improve flood resilience.

Visit The Flood Hub to find out about sandbags and sandbag alternatives.

Sign up for flood warnings

You can sign up for flood warnings if your home or business is at risk of flooding.
