If you live in Stockport and have difficulties visiting a library, you can use our free Home Library Service (HLS).
The service is open to all ages and is also available to full time carers.
You can also join the HLS on a temporary basis. For example if you're:
- recovering from an operation
- confined to your house
When you join, you'll be asked to give us an idea of what you like to read. For example:
- crime
- thrillers
- romance
- family sagas
Our team of experienced staff will choose the items for you according to your preferences.
You can change your preferences over time as you let us know what you think about your book choices.
How to join
To apply for the HLS call our team on 0161 474 5600 or email homelibraryservice@stockport.gov.uk
When you join the HLS you cannot use any other Stockport Library. You will also have to give up your existing library card for the duration of your time with us.
Receiving your books
Every 3 weeks a volunteer or member of the library staff will visit you to change your books. You'll be informed of the day of the week and the approximate time we'll call.
You can keep any items you have not finished and return the rest. Staff will renew any outstanding items for you.
Other items you can borrow
We also have a wide range of other items for loan, including:
- large Print books
- talking books
- DVDs
You can borrow as many books as you feel you can read between visits. As a guide we normally supply between 4 and 8 items per delivery.
If there's a specific item you'd like to borrow then let us know by calling 0161 474 5600. You can also speak to the next delivery person or leave a note in your next collection box. We'll do our best to obtain the item for you.
Requests to borrow a particular item are free of charge.
Cancelling a visit
You can cancel one visit, a period of visits or the whole service.
Just get in touch and let us know your details. Call 0161 474 5600 or email homelibraryservice@stockport.gov.uk
