This is an exciting time to join the Highways and Transport Team. We're delivering a programme of capital schemes across the borough, including:
- highway improvements along the A34, where the government has announced it will invest £33.6 million
- the Cheadle Towns Fund, as part of this we have secured £13.9 million towards 3 of its proposed projects, including a new railway station which is the first one in Greater Manchester in more than 30 years!

Our teams include:
Bridges and Structures, we look after 708 structures across Stockport: 102 Road Bridges, 152 Footbridges, 316 Retaining Walls, 103 Culverts, 9 Subways, 13 Sign and Signal Gantries, 1 Tunnel and 1 special. We carry out general inspections and special inspections on extreme weather events or impact damage
Design and Construction, we undertake feasibility, detailed design and construction of schemes which can be split into three categories: Capital, Section 278 and Section 38. There are also landscape design schemes and we assist developers with the design approvals of development works that affect the adopted highway
Feasibility and Client team, we develop new Highway and Sustainable Travel schemes of all shapes and sizes from concept to approval
Flood Risk, we became a Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) under the Flood and Water Management Act (2010). The team are responsible for managing local flood risk from surface water, ground water and ordinary watercourses in Stockport. One of the duties placed upon us is to assist in the management of local flood risks. Local Flood Risk Management Strategy (LFRMS) is intended to demonstrate our understanding and role in managing the flood risk within the borough of Stockport and its role in working with other key stakeholders and the local community.
Network Asset Maintenance Team, we're responsible for reactive and planned maintenance (HIP) of the highway network. Structural replacement or repair and LEDIP of street lighting and signs. The service also includes highway weed control, highway drainage and winter service.
Network Management, we're responsible for dealing with public enquiries to the Highway, as well as overseeing schemes to introduce new elements to the highway. This includes Traffic Regulation Orders, such as double yellow lines, requests for items such as bollards, and also advisory disabled bays and access protection markings. We work closely with the local councillors as part of our work and consult with residents directly and frequently.
Programme and Project Management Team, we form part of the Capital Delivery Service, who work alongside Highways and Transportation. Our duties involve Capital Programme Project Management and providing a Programme Management Office (PMO) to provide a consistent approach to project development and delivery. Capital Programme Project Management involves the management of minor, major and section 278 highway schemes. This involves duties such as: organising regular progress meetings, developing schedules, managing and monitoring project change, risk management and assisting with budget monitoring and control.
Road Safety Team, we provide road safety advice, develop road safety schemes, undertake Road Safety Audits and provide road safety and Bikeability training in schools.
Streetworks, we carry out roadworks as part of the essential repair and improvement of our roads. Public utility companies also carry out roadworks to maintain essential gas, water, electricity and phone services. Some of these works will require the use of temporary traffic lights or temporary road closures. Our dedicated team manage all these works to ensure the highways keep working safely.
Transport Strategy Team, we work hard developing policies that will create a safer, greener Stockport. Policies are important as they set a general plan of action used to guide desired outcomes and are fundamental to help make decisions. Our duties include supporting informed strategic and operational decision making by influencing and promoting transport priorities, supporting development of the Local Plan, identifying and supporting the delivery of key transport capital schemes and preparing the councils strategic transport plan and general policies. The team is broken down into sub teams that include Public Rights of Way, Policy, community rail, sustainable travel, QGIS support to the whole of highways, communications support to major projects and active neighbourhoods.
