The grids at the edge of roads and footways collect surface water and drain into public sewers. Eventually, they discharge into rivers and other watercourses.
The grids incorporate a trap designed to collect environmental waste. This is in order to try and prevent a blockage in the main sewers. It's important to clean and maintain drains and grids so that they can work properly.
There are over 70,000 road grids across Stockport. The cleansing team visit each one at least once every 18 months. Any that are prone to regular blocking are cleaned more often. To clean them, the team use water to loosen the contents and a pump is used to suck it out.
United Utilities are the sewage undertaker for Stockport.
