Electoral registers

The Local Heritage Library holds a range of electoral registers from the 1800s to last years, whatever that year is (the current register is kept at the counter in the Lending Library). Most of these registers are on microfilm.

  • Coverage of the full Stockport area is not comprehensive as the various Urban District Councils (UDCs) that amalgamated over time to form Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council in 1974 had their own registers and we do not hold copies of all of them. Please ask a member of staff to check this if the address you want was in a UDC area
  • From 1919 onwards all registered are indexed by address only and not by name of the person, before this there is a name index for the some wards
  • People would only appear on an Electoral Register if they were eligible to vote and had registered
  • Before 1832 inclusion in the Land Tax Returns (1780-1831) was proof of qualification to vote. We have some Land Tax records of microfilm
