Roads

Precautionary gritting of the main road network is based on:

  • weather forecasts
  • existing or potential road moisture
  • existing grit on the road

We'll carry out further gritting and ploughing when it snows on our priority routes.

Roads are divided into different categories, based on their level of use.

  • Major ‘A’ roads, bus routes and key transport routes are classified as priority routes which will be gritted first
  • Secondary bus routes, school routes and feeder roads that carry high levels of traffic are also classified as priority routes and will be gritted after the above routes have treated and are safe

Other residential roads listed in our winter service operational plan will be treated during prolonged, severe weather conditions when the main roads have been treated.

We consider Met Office data and local weather station information before deciding on appropriate actions and levels of priority.

You can use our map to find out which road are our priorities.
