Gritting roads and pavements

3. Pavements

Pavements are dealt with on a priority basis. The areas that are gritted include steep roads that are main routes to:

  • schools
  • train and bus stations
  • health centres and hospitals
  • retail centres

Priority 1 pavements, which are based on a risk assessment, will be treated before 9am.

Priority 2 pavements will be treated if the conditions are persistent and there are resources available.

Areas may not be treated on weekends when it's no longer a priority – for example,
school routes have limited use on a weekend.

Priority pavement and cycle routes will normally be gritted during working hours using all available resources.
