In this celebration double bill of two of Mr Alfred Hitchcock’s earliest releases we honour one of cinemas greatest directors of all time.

The Lodger (1927 Release) – Silent

A serial killer known as “The Avenger” is on the loose in London when a mysterious man arrives at the house of Mr and Mrs Bunting looking for a room to rent. The Bunting’s daughter is seeing one of the detectives assigned to the murder case but he becomes jealous of the lodger and begins to suspect he may be The Avenger.

Blackmail (1929 Release) – Early Sound

When Franks job at Scotland Yard comes between them, Alice accepts a date with another man. The handsome artist invites Alice to pose for a portrait but then tries to assault her. She kills him in self defence.

Assigned to the case, Detective Frank soon learns the identity of the killer, but so does someone else.

During production of this silent feature, Hitchcock added dialogue with the advent of talking pictures in America, making this England’s first Talkie.
