Ethnic Minority Achievement team

1. Overview

The Ethnic Minority Achievement team is made up of specialist teachers and bilingual teaching assistants. They are working in nurseries and primary and secondary schools in Stockport.

Our main aim is to raise the achievement of minority ethnic pupils in partnership with schools and other organisations.

We provide a range of support for Refugee/Asylum Seeker, African Caribbean, Gypsy/Traveller and pupils learning English as an Additional Language.

We offer specialist teachers in partnership with mainstream teachers to assess and teach pupils.

Bilingual teaching assistants are on offer short-term support in the first language for pupils in the early stages of learning English. Although the main focus of the work is usually in the Foundation Stage, this support may be offered for other key stages.

Other activities offered include;

  • advice for teachers of referred pupils
  • training
  • differentiating resources
  • policy development
  • making links with the minority ethnic parents and other agencies
