1. Equipment and adaptations assessment

Our equipment and adaptations service offers support to adults who have:

  • a disability
  • illness or injury
  • sight or hearing loss

Enquire about equipment and adaptations

When we receive your enquiry, we'll arrange for someone to contact you to arrange an assessment.

You'll be given the highest priority if:

  • your situation is urgent
  • you're returning home from hospital
  • you're at risk

Assessment for disabilities, illness or injury

Your assessment will usually take place in your home. We can also do this by telephone. We'll ask you to tell us, and to demonstrate to us, how you manage daily living activities.

From your assessment you may receive:

  • information and advice about managing your disability
  • information and advice about other services
  • some simple items of equipment
  • recommendations for major or specialist adaptations. For example; a stair lift, hoists or shower chairs
  • a visit from our Handyperson Service who can fit minor adaptations. For example; rails. They can also help with minor repairs
  • specialist equipment for hearing or sight loss
  • information, advice and training from our Rehabilitation Officers for visual impairment

Assessment for sight or hearing loss

Once we've received your enquiry the information you provide will be screened and the referral will be put on a waiting list. The waiting list can be 3 to 4 months.

You'll be given the highest priority if:

  • your situation is urgent
  • you're at risk

Your assessment will usually take place in your home. We can also do this by telephone if your need is not complex.

During the assessment we'll gather information about your visual impairment and ask you to tell us, or demonstrate, any difficulties you may be experiencing.

Alongside support and equipment, your assessor may also be able to:

  • provide equipment or adaptations to help with your physical disability
  • refer you on to other appropriate services. For example; the Greater Manchester Fire Service, physiotherapy or Carecall
  • signpost you to other services which you may find beneficial
