The council is composed of 63 councillors as follows (as of 4 May 2018);

  • Labour 23
  • Liberal Democrats 21
  • Conservatives 13
  • Independent Ratepayers 3
  • Independent 2
  • Vacancy 1 (Edgeley and Cheadle Heath Ward seat due to be contested on Thursday 24 May 2018)

Councillors are normally elected for a period of four years and elections usually take place on the first Thursday in May on three out of four years.
