Dog warden service
8. Keeping a dog that you have found
If you secure a stray dog then you're legally obliged to return it to its owner. Or you're obliged to inform the local Dog Warden Service or police station. Failure to do so could result in you being accused of theft.
If you're interested in keeping a stray dog which you have found, you should inform the Dog Warden Service. Where you're able to keep the dog, the warden will assess the suitability of you and your household. If satisfied, they will complete a Finder-Keeper form.
Finder-keepers are legally required to keep a stray dog for no less than one month. However they may be required to return the dog to its identified owner at any time.
You can contact the Dog Warden Service by calling 0161 474 4207 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
