The Family Group Conferencing service at Stockport Family supports and empowers families to come together and utilise the strengths within their network so they can make a plan to resolve any challenges and difficulties they may be facing.
We believe families should be making decisions for their children, rather than professionals.
What is a Family Group Conference?
A Family Group Conference (FGC) is a meeting for a child or young person, their family, friends and anyone who's important to them. It’s a safe place where everyone can talk though issues and come up with a plan to make things better.
The family will be assigned an FGC coordinator who is an independent person that organises and coordinates the meeting for family members.
When can a Family Group Conference be useful?
Families are at the heart of what we do in Stockport, and we believe that families know themselves best. A Family Group Conference can be helpful in almost any situation where a plan or a decision needs to be made for children or a young person, to resolve issues and/or improve safety.
Some examples of where they might be useful include:
- supporting families to have a voice and make plans when Children’s Social Care are involved
- helping relatives to care for children and young people if they cannot live safely at home with their parents
- supporting a parent with a mental or physical disability
- consolidating support available for children, young people and their parents from within their own networks
The Family Group Conference Service is independent from Children’s Social Care and is not involved in any decision-making process. It's also a process based on consent; it's your decision whether you want a Family Group Conference.
Meetings are organised by an independent FGC co-ordinator who is allocated to work with you and your family.
How to access the service
If you're interested in family group conference then please speak to your children's social worker who'll be able to refer you to the service.
