About us
We meet every Wednesday evening (7:30 to 10:30pm) at the Cheadle Hulme Institute, located at the corner of Church Road and Hulme Hall Road in Cheadle Hulme. Upon entering the building there is a small staircase consisting of 4 steps going down to the clubroom. For those with mobility issues, there is now a chairlift in place and also a wheelchair ramp is available if required.
We pride ourselves on being a friendly and informal club, and welcome players of all abilities. Most members play for one of our teams, which compete against other clubs in the Stockport Chess League. A member wishing to do so, will need to be familiar with the operation of a chess clock and be able to record all the moves made during a game. If these aspects of chess are unfamiliar to the member, they can quickly be explained by any club member and practiced during friendly games at the club.
To play in the Stockport League you will need to be a member of the English Chess Federation. You can find full details for membership and how to apply can on the English Chess Federation website.
We have a club competition which runs throughout the playing season (September through May), and some social evenings when we play 10-minute games and have refreshments. There is also a small library of chess books which can be borrowed free of charge.
Membership subscriptions are reviewed annually at our AGM which normally takes place around May/June each year. A condition of membership for those below 18 years of age who wishes to apply for membership is that he/she must be always accompanied by his/her parent/guardian when attending the Club. The parent/guardian will also be required to complete and sign a consent form titled “Parental Advice & Consent for Junior Members”.
Because of resource issues, the club would not normally be able to accommodate children younger than 14 years of age.
