Registration of deaths

4. Tell us once service

When someone has died, we can now make it easier for you to inform some Council Services and Government departments that need to know about the death, with our 'Tell Us Once' service.

Following bereavement, a death must be formally registered with the local Registrar.

In addition to registering a death the Registrar will now also generate a 'Tell Us Once' reference number which you can use to inform the services that are included in the scheme.

Once you have your reference number complete the 'Tell Us Once' process by using one of the options below:

By telephone – please call the Department for Work and Pensions on 0800 085 7308. The lines are open Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm.

This number is free to call from a BT landline, but other providers, including mobile phone providers, may charge you. If you don’t speak English, call us on 0800 085 7308 and one of our Advisers and an interpreter will call you back and help you.

Online – please enter your reference number on the GOV UK website and follow the instructions listed.
