About cooling towers
If your business premises has a device to cool water or other fluids by the passage of large volumes of air across them, you must notify us of their location under the Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992.
The purpose of the notification is to:
- identify potential areas that could give rise to the spread of an infection. For example, legionella
- make sure preventative measures are taken to eliminate the risk of infection arising to employees and the public
The number of cooling towers on site should be noted on the notification form. This is regardless of whether it's the council or Health and Safety Executive that's the enforcing authority for the premises concerned.
The Health and Safety Executive inspect cooling towers and evaporative condensers for legal compliance.
