Supported internships
If you’re a young person with additional needs and you're thinking about work, a supported internship could be the perfect next step.
A supported internship is a study programme for young people aged 16 to 24 with additional needs or disabilities. It helps you move from education into the world of work, with support tailored to your goals and potential. You can:
- gain real workplace experience
- get support from a job coach
- study at a local college
Internships usually last a full academic year and are designed for those who want to work but need a little extra help to get there.
Who can apply for a supported internship?
You might be eligible for a supported internship if you:
- are aged 16 to 24
- have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
- want to move into paid work
- are willing to learn and take part
- can travel to a placement (support is available)
What does a supported internship involve?
A supported internship includes:
- a workplace placement (one to 4 days a week): gain hands-on experience in sectors like admin, retail, hospitality, care and more
- job coach support: a coach works with you and your employer to help you feel confident and supported
- college learning (up to 4 days a week): continue learning English, maths and employability skills
- regular reviews: track your progress and adapt support as needed
Why choose a supported internship?
You might choose a supported internship if you want to:
- gain real work experience in a setting that suits your skills
- build life and job skills like timekeeping and teamwork
- develop confidence and independence
- work with a job coach who supports your journey
- improve your chances of paid employment
