Children leaving care

5. Education and employment

Education

Early planning is vital to ensure you get the right support to meet your needs. Your Personal Education Plan and Pathway Plan should already include information about your career aspirations and ambitions. You may also find the Pathway to Success (PDF 287Kb) factsheet useful.

Where care leavers are continuing with an education or training course beyond their 21st birthday, the practical and financial support being provided will continue to be set out in your pathway plan.

For more information, view the support for care leavers aged 21 to 25 (PDF 1.7Mb) document.

From April 2011 there was a change in law which means that care leavers up to their 25th birthday who tell their Local Authority that they have returned, or want to return, to education or training will be entitled to an assessment of their needs which will inform any support or assistance to be provided.

Employment

If you are wanting to go into employment, the following links will be useful.

If you are wanting to go into Further or Higher Education, visit the Propel and NNECL websites to access lots of useful information for care leavers.

Training

You can find out more information from the schools and education pages and 14-19 education and training pages.
