Check if you need building regulations
Last updated 24 August 2021
You may need building regulation approval depending on the type of work you wish to undertake to make sure the work meets building regulations standards.
If you're a homeowner and planning an extension or conversion, you may require a building regulations inspection to make sure your home is safe.
Getting building work approved by our building control team guarantees that the work is up to building regulations standards.
If you're a householder and want to find out if you need building regulations for your project, use the button below.
Before you start
- you're advised not to construct conservatories where they'll restrict ladder access to windows serving rooms in roof or loft conversions, particularly if any of the windows are intended to help escape or rescue if there's a fire
- planning permission may still be required and advice should be sought by contacting the planning department
You can also use the planning portal’s interactive house. This will advise whether building regulations are required and how to get approval. You can also use it to find building regulations guidance for common building work projects and read case studies of people’s experiences when undertaking a number of projects.
