Our cemeteries

Stockport has 5 cemetery sites. We're proud to offer cemeteries to people of all faiths and beliefs and we welcome all visitors to our cemetery grounds. We're always respectful, friendly and happy to help, no matter how big or small you feel your query may be. You can contact us for advice on any cemetery issue. Read our cemeteries terms of use.

Important points to note

The cemeteries are shared community spaces. Visitors are kindly asked to respect the peace, dignity and reverence of these facilities in order to promote them as places of tranquillity for quiet reflection.

The Exclusive Right of Burial entitles the DEED holder to determine who is buried in the grave (including ashes) and whether a memorial can be erected for a period of 75 years. It does not provide any ownership to the land itself. Any burial bookings can be made via the cemetery office, either by you directly or by a Funeral Director on your behalf.

All requests for works to headstones must be made via the cemeteries office and can only be carried out once permission is granted and by a Memorial Mason registered with Stockport Council. This is to ensure that all headstones are safe. Any unauthorised headstones may be removed and you may be charged for their removal.

All cemeteries are managed as lawn cemeteries. Funeral floral tributes may be placed on the grave space immediately following a funeral. We respectfully ask you to remove such funeral tributes from the lawn area once they have faded. Cemetery staff can assist with this when requested.

You may see that a grave has settled during the first 6 months after burial. When this happens will vary according to local ground conditions. This is normal and is when the cemetery service will re-level and take steps to return it to lawn. Please let us know when this happens to your grave so that we can assist.

So that we can maintain the lawns and carry out grave digging operations whilst accommodating the choices of individuals, small tributes may be placed on the concrete foundations adjacent to or in place of the grave headstone. The placement of tribute memorabilia, floral tributes, planting, edgings, benches and ground coverings is not permitted on any lawn areas including the grass directly over a grave and any communal areas of the cemetery. Any unauthorised memorabilia or planting may be removed without notice and disposed of. You may be charged for its removal and for the replacement of any turf you may have removed.

It's our job to maintain the cemetery grounds. For safety and your personal liability for any damage, the use of private machinery such as lawn mowers may be allowed if we have given permission. Please contact us to discuss.

Dogs are permitted in the cemeteries, as long as they are under control and on a lead at all times. Fouling should be immediately picked up and disposed of in a bin. Fouling or littering fixed penalty notices may be served by Council staff.

All vehicles must be parked in designated parking areas. Do not park on grassed areas as you may unknowingly be parking on unmarked grave spaces or churn up the grass. Funeral vehicles and corteges have priority on the roadways at all times.

Cemetery fees are reviewed on an annual basis. Memorial bench plaques are available to lease.
