Council CAN

Our 2024 to 2025 annual report outlines the progress made with the Climate And Nature (formerly Climate Action Now) programme over the last financial year.

Key progress 2024 to 2025

Transitioning to a zero-emissions fleet

We reviewed ways to cut emissions from the fleet managed by Totally Local Company (TLC), focusing on Electric Vehicles and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel. TLC found that most vehicles could switch to HVO right away, without needing to buy new EVs or install charging points.

After successful trials, a new HVO fuel tank was installed at Endeavour House, where most fleet vehicles are based. 77% of those vehicles are now running on HVO, with plans to convert the rest. This switch is expected to cut emissions by 1,500 tonnes per year.

Carbon Literacy training

Carbon Literacy training helps people understand climate change and how to take action. Since April 2024, 118 staff members and Councillors have completed the training with the CAN team. We’ve delivered tailored sessions for teams like Streetworks and Public Health, and have continued dedicated training for councillors.

Green Libraries Working Group

Our Green Libraries Working Group continues to reduce emissions and use libraries as community hubs. This year, we completed and launched the Bredbury Bookworms Garden as well as a nature-themed story trail in Alexandra Park near Edgeley Library. We held events like upcycling and seed planting, which brought more residents into library spaces and encouraged climate-friendly activities.

Measuring and monitoring our greenhouse gas emissions

We use data to track the council’s greenhouse gas emissions and identify where we can make the biggest impact. This year, we’ve improved our data by including employee commuting and homeworking, meaning we now track all emissions covered by our 2030 net zero target.

Stockport Council best practice

Sharing best practice helps meet climate targets. This year, we presented at a Local Government Association roundtable on behaviour change, sharing how we engage residents and businesses in climate action. We also work with partners across Greater Manchester through the Green City Region Board and the 5-Year Environment Plan. We meet quarterly with climate officers from other councils to exchange ideas and learn from each other.
