October 2025 update
A closer look behind the scenes
This month’s update is a showcase of some of the incredible work that's been taking place under the temporary roof at Bramall Hall.
From delicate conservation to major structural restoration, we’re excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at how we’re caring for this remarkable building.
New film: conserving Bramall’s wall paintings
This brand-new film takes you behind the scenes of the meticulous work to protect our rare Tudor wall paintings, ahead of Phase 3 of the roof restoration.
Two expert painting conservators from Lancashire Conservation Studios have spent time at the Hall carefully assessing the condition of these nationally significant artworks. In the film, you’ll see how they applied a specialist protective layer known as Tarantula Tissue, a fine, opaque material designed to shield the paintings during the upcoming building works.
The film also explores why this conservation is so vital, and what makes Bramall’s wall paintings such a rare and important survival from the Tudor period.
Time-lapse: what’s happening under the temporary roof
To understand the full scope of the restoration, don’t miss our new timelapse video. It shows the transformation taking place under the temporary roof, from the laying of timber battens and slate tiles, to chimney repointing and the installation of heritage-grade skylights.
You'll also see the impressive Phase Two scaffolding being constructed. With two-thirds of the Hall now under cover, it’s slowly disappearing beneath its protective shell. Phase Three of the scaffolding will begin in November, once the roosting season for our protected colony of bats has ended.
