Information for schools

Bilingual Assistants work mainly with pupils new to English and/or in the Foundation Stage. Our aim is to promote the inclusion of these pupils in all aspects of school life.

In addition to facilitating access to the mainstream curriculum, bilingual support allows the first language to continue to develop whilst English is being acquired. These means that teachers can start to build upon existing knowledge and skills immediately.

Bilingual assistants can play an important role in developing the self-esteem of pupils from minority ethnic communities. They also help the school to form vital links with their parents.

If you have a bilingual child in your class, you can contact the Ethnic Diversity Service by emailing eds.admin@stockport.gov.uk or calling 0161 477 9000 to discuss the support needed.
