About Trading Standards
We have a statutory duty to enforce a wide range of consumer protection legislation. We work to ensure that all local businesses comply with the law.
Trading Standards officers ensure compliance with consumer protection legislation through a combination of;
- providing business advice
- inspecting premises
- investigating complaints
- carrying out proactive work such as using product safety surveys and testing purchasing exercises of age-restricted goods.
Where necessary, Trading Standards may instigate legal proceedings against traders. For example, on matters such as unsafe goods, short weight, doorstep crime, unroadworthy/clocked cars, counterfeiting.
