About the changes

1. Overview

On 16th October the A6 between Exchange Street (Garrick Theatre) and Heaton Lane reopened. This was following the completion of the first phase of the essential A6 bridge repairs. This was a significant point to reach and is great news for the town centre. It's also great for users of the A6 with the repairs being completed on time and on budget.

Whilst the A6 is now open to traffic again, work still needs to take place. This is so that we can finish the repairs and ensure the bridge's safety for the future.

Additional works to the bridge over Daw Bank will commence in January 2018. This work will require the section of Daw Bank under the bridge to be closed for approximately eight weeks. This is to to enable the works to be undertaken safely. The work at Daw Bank will include;

  • the removal of the existing bridge parapet and its replacement with a new stone parapet
  • the refurbishment of existing steel beams including repainting
  • replacement of the brickwork cladding to bridge piers.

Pedestrian access will be maintained along Daw Bank throughout this time.

Finally, contractors will move the focus of their repair work onto the western side (bus station side) of the bridge. This is to repair the existing render covering the bridge and the under all arches. It is expected this work will begin in February 2018.
