About the changes

On the 16 October 2017 the A6 between Exchange Street (Garrick Theatre) and Heaton Lane reopened. This was following the completion of the first phase of the essential A6 bridge repairs. This was a significant point to reach and is great news for the town centre. It's also great for users of the A6 with the repairs being completed on time and on budget.

The A6 is now open to traffic again but some work still needs to take place. This is so that we can finish the repairs and ensure the bridge's safety for the future.

Since the A6 reopened repair work on the sides, underneath and inside the bridge has been continuing.

The works on the inside and underneath of the bridge are taking place from Daw Bank to keep disruption to a minimum for pedestrians, motorists and road users.

Whilst works continues, a section of Daw Bank under the bridge will closed over four weekends so that works can be undertaken safely.

The next closure will take place on the weekend of 28 to 29 April 2018.

From 7am on Saturday 28 April to 5pm on Sunday 29 April 2018, Daw Bank under the bridge will be closed for refurbishing the existing steel beams. During this time, signed diversion routes will be in place for both pedestrians and motorists.

The diversion route for vehicles travelling eastbound will be via Exchange Street / Wellington Road South / Wellington Street and Piccadilly. Westbound this will be via Duke Street / St. Petersgate and Exchange Street.
