Children in Stockport are being urged to stay visible on the roads during the darker nights, as part of the Council’s annual ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ initiative.
Without wearing reflective items, children may only be visible at 30 metres away, in low beam headlights. By making sure that children wear reflective clothing enables them to be seen at 150 metres, giving drivers five times the distance to notice them and avoid an accident.
Children who cycle to school can also take extra care by ensuring that their bike has a white front light and a red back light with a red reflector at the back.
To promote the initiative Stockport Council invited pupils from all the borough’s primary schools to enter a design a poster competition to promote being safe and seen and to think of a slogan to promote this message.
The winning ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ (2.26mb pdf file) poster has been announced as Year 6, pupil Mary Greer-Arnfield from Romiley Primary School who will receive Decothlon vouchers. The poster has also been displayed in all local libraries and Romiley Primary School.
