Cycling - Getting Started

Getting Started

Some things to think about before getting started:

  • Make sure your bike is roadworthy, particularly if you haven't ridden it for a while
  • Would you benefit from cycle training, or a mentor to give you the confidence to get you started
  • Work out the route you are going to take
  • Find a ‘bike buddy’ it’s both fun and safer to cycle together

Buying a Bike

The whycycle? website provides impartial advice for new cyclists.  The site will take you through different bikes to suit your needs and give a rough idea of costs.

Staying Safe

It is important to know the rules of the road and the correct cycling etiquette when out and about cycling.

The NHS website provides tips on road safety and the law relating to cycling.
You can reduce the risk of accidents by following the rules of the road, acting responsibly towards other road users and following the advice on the site.
