Cycle Parking and Security

Cycle Parking

Stockport Council has been providing more cycle parking facilities throughout areas of the borough.

Many locations of cycle parking locally can be found on the Stockport cycle map or by ringing 0161 474 4593.

Cycle Lockers at Stations and Town Centres

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) expects to provide town centre cycle centres and compounds, including a cycle compound in Stockport.

There is also a Bicycle Locker scheme (BLUC) provided by TfGM to encourage people to use their cycles to travel to trains, Metrolinks, bus stations and town centre locations across Greater Manchester. You can use any BLUC locker within the scheme.

To join BLUC and check your bike will fit into the BLUC lockers visit the BLUC website.

Cycle Security & Locks

To keep your bike safe when parking on the street, it is best to use cycle parking stands if available.

Look for secure, immovable cycle parking which is bolted securely or embedded into the ground. The stands should ideally allow you to lock both your frame and your wheels to the stand.

Parking which only allows your front wheel to be locked should be avoided as thieves can remove your front wheel and still take the rest of your bike.

'D' OR 'U' shaped Sheffield stands will allow you to do this, but beware of the temptation to only lock your bike through the frame as wheels can easily be removed and stolen.

It is generally advised to spend at least 10% of the value of your bike on a lock, and, if you can, to use two different types of lock to deter thieves.

For more information on locks and security tips visit the whycycle? website.

Cycle Insurance

It is also worth considering insuring your bike against theft. Your bicycle may already be covered on your household insurance, but if this is the case it’s important to check the fine print.

To satisfy any claims, make sure you keep the receipt for your bike, or get a written evaluation from a bike shop.
