The Etherow Goyt Valley Way is a 25km (15mile) footpath linking Vernon Park in Stockport with the Longdendale Trail in the Peak District near Hadfield.
The route leads from formal park to National Park, passing through two country parks on the way. It passes through riverside meadow, and many areas of fine woodland, and includes constantly changing and extensive views, especially in the middle section where the Way runs high above the valley. History is brought to life in many interesting reminders of the Industrial Revolution, and wildlife enthusiasts will find much to enjoy.
The River Etherow rises on the moors east of Longdendale. Flowing via the five Longdendale reservoirs it then turns southwest through Broadbottom to join the River Goyt near Compstall. The Goyt rises on the Derbyshire moors south of Buxton, and flows to the centre of Stockport, where it joins with the River Tame to become the Mersey.
The terrain
On the whole the going is fairly easy, although there are several short ascents and the section from Etherow Country Park to Lymefield Visitor Centre includes a climb across the side of Werneth Low. The Way follows a mixture of surfaced paths, field footpaths, farm lanes, and quiet roads. There is very little 'busy road' walking, but the paths can get very muddy in some areas.
What to wear
Stout shoes or hiking boots are essential for the complete walk. Warm and waterproof clothing is also recommended.

Refreshments can be obtained at Stockport Museum in Vernon Park; at Chadkirk Chapel coffee shop; at Etherow Country Park; at the Wyevale Garden Centre (close to the Chadkirk Country Estate); at Lymefield Nursery (adjoining the Way in Broadbottom); and at public houses and cafes in Compstall, Broadbottom, Whaley Bridge, Hollingworth and Hadfield.
Where to find us
The walk starts at the entrance to Vernon Park on the B6104 a kilometre east of Stockport town centre, on the way to Bredbury. The entrance to Vernon Park is at the busy traffic light junction of New Bridge Lane, Carrington Road and New Zealand Road (Grid reference SJ 908 909).
Buses from Stockport, Romiley, Hyde and Ashton-under-Lyne stop on New Bridge Lane outside the park.
