Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

Sustainability and Climate Change

Local Authorities have a crucial role to play in securing a sustainable environment at the local level and contributing to sustainability outcomes at the regional, governmental and international level.
We have a responsibility to make positive contributions at the local level to broader national and global sustainability objectives, like those contained in the 2005 UK Government’s Sustainable Development Strategy.

We also have a responsibility to lead by example and help the broader community make a positive contribution to the local environment.

Prudent use of the world’s natural resources and the protection of the global eco-system are a condition for sustainable development, together with economic prosperity and social development. Sustainable development is concerned with our long-term welfare and the heritage we leave to our children and grandchildren.
