Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

Asbestos

Asbestos is now rarely used in materials for home use. However, it has been widely used in the past in building materials, e.g. asbestos cement products (corrugated sheeting typically used for applications such as garage roofs), and is considered to be low risk.

These low risk, asbestos cement products can be disposed of safely at the Household Waste Recycling Sites, see 'Related Pages' for details of these sites.

It is recommended when moving asbestos cement products that you avoid breaking sheets, damp the product down prior to moving it to avoid dust and bag smaller items. See Asbestos in Domestic Properties FAQ's 'Related Pages' for further information on moving asbestos.

Other products which may contain asbestos include pipe lagging, and textured plasters and floor tiles. These products should be considered as high risk and specialist advice on disposal should be obtained from the Council's Health and Safety Team. To contact them see 'Related Contacts' on the right.
