Children with special educational needs all have disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most children of the same age. These children may need extra or different help and support.
For information relating to Stockport’s Special Educational Needs Section please see the link on the right of this page for the Stockport Children & Young People's Disability Partnership which the section are a part of.
Other partnership services include the Stockports Portage Service, Aiming High for Disabled Children and the Children's Therapy Services, from the PCT and Foundation Trust.
Special Educational Needs and Disability - Every Child Matters
The Government's strategy for Special Educational Needs (SEN) was launched in February 2004.
It sets out the Government's vision for enabling children with SEN to realise their potential and a programme of sustained action and review over a number of years to support early years settings, schools and local authorities in improving provision for children with SEN in four key areas. It builds on the proposals for integrating children's services in the Every Child Matters Green Paper and includes a strategy for improving childcare for families of children with SEN and disabilities.
Please see the link on the right of this page for further details.
Children with Disabilities Team (Social Care)
Find information here about services available from Social Care to help and support families with children and young people who have disabilities, whether it is a physical or a learning disability, or a special need. For children and young people with disabilities or special needs, services may be provided up to and including 18 years of age.
When you see us, we will need to note some basic information about your child and your family. You will be given advice and information and a social work assessment may be arranged. Most services are free. However, there may be a charge for some services like adaptations to your house, depending on your income. All services are open to everyone regardless of their religion, race, culture, language and differing abilities.
There are a number of groups and organisations, both local and national, which provides advice and support to different sections of the community.

Blue Badge Scheme Involving Children with Disabilities
A Blue Badge can permit parking where it is otherwise restricted. A badge may be applied for in relation to a child who is over two years old and has serious difficulty walking. There are new criteria for children under two years who have a condition requiring the transportation of bulky medical equipment or have to be kept near a vehicle at all times for treatment in the vehicle or for transportation to a place for treatment. There is an application form on this page.
Stockport Disability Database
Stockport Disability Database aims to empower parents and carers by providing information about all the services in Stockport that are available, including benefits, leisure activities, health, social care and education opportunities.
The Social Work Assessment
Apart from information and advice, further help will depend on something called a social work assessment. Find out more about this here.
