The Stockport Children & Young People’s Directorate Psychology Service delivers a high quality service to Stockport children and young people, in partnership with parents, carers, and professionals.
We apply psychology to enhance the learning, development and well-being of all children and young people, with a particular focus on those who are the most vulnerable. Our primary aim is to act in the best interests of the child at all times.
The Psychology Service’s Child and Educational Psychologists are applied psychologists who have a degree in psychology, teaching experience and either a master’s degree in educational psychology and / or a doctorate. The Psychology Service is a part of the Local Authority (LA) and fulfils a wide range of statutory and non-statutory functions, which are described below.
Services Provided
Our statutory and strategic duties include:
- advice to the LA for statutory assessments
- input to annual, transfer and transition reviews of children with statements
- monitoring placements of children placed outside the LA
- support to the LA in the monitoring and moderating of SEN provision
- contributing to panels and strategic working groups
- carrying out small scale research and project work for the LA
- contributing to central training for schools and LA staff
- responding to critical incidents and bereavements as part of the LA Emergency Plan
- contributing to the development of new ways of working to enhance teaching and learning, and the consequent outcomes for children and young people
The Psychology Service has a range of functions within the Local Authority and Children's Trust:
- psychological input within a wide range of social care contexts
- input to enhance the outcomes for Looked After Children
- pre-nursery work and links with the Child Development Unit
- a service to special schools and pupil referral units
- a service to education support teams such as Behaviour Support Service, Education Support Team for Young People in Public Care
- contribution to ADOS assessments and Autism pathway
- contribution to TaMHS project
- development work in specialist areas such as autism
In addition to the above, the Psychology Service provides a range of bought back services, including:
- psychological input to the Portage Service
- psychological input to the Youth Offending Team
- psychological input to Primary Jigsaw
- Sure Start training for childminders and providers in pre-school settings and after school clubs
- additional visits to schools
- project work (various)
