Safeguarding Children

The Safeguarding Children Unit is part of Social Care and has four main areas of work:

  • Looked After Children
  • Child Protection
  • Common Assessment Framework / Common Processes
  • and Family Group Meetings.

The Safeguarding Children Unit has three key purposes:

Operational
To deliver an effective conference and review service for children involved in the child protection system and for children who become looked after by the local authority. Also to provide an effective family group meeting service that is responsive to meeting the overall strategic objectives of the organisation. The Unit is also responsible for facilitating the development of a multi-agency framework for responding to children in need.

Performance monitoring
To set standards and monitor performance across a range of activities concerned with safeguarding and achieving the best possible outcomes for vulnerable children on a shared basis at the earliest opportunity. This also encompasses ensuring that families and agency representatives are central to the review and evaluation of all the work carried out.

Promotional
To positively promote good practice through the provision of advice and support, written guidance, policy and procedure, and a contribution to the development and delivery of training.

The Unit takes a lead role in collecting data for statistical returns to central Government. It provides assistance and support throughout the service in the collection and use of management information to inform and improve on performance. It aims to develop and sustain effective working relationships with other agencies to facilitate information sharing and a collaborative approach to care planning, child protection planning and service delivery.

Family Group Meetings
Stockport Family Group Meetings Project aims to make life better for children and young people by helping family members and other significant people get together to focus on the future needs of the child.

Looked After Children and Child Protection
The Safeguarding Children Unit leads multi-agency meetings where there are significant concerns about harm to a child and provides an in-depth review of all children where the Local Authority share the responsibility for their care and future.
