Aiming High for Disabled Children

The Government Report Aiming High for Disabled Children (AHDC): better support for families was written in 2007 after the Disabled Children Review.

The Government believes that every child matters and this Review will take us closer to achieving our aim of ensuring that every disabled child can have the best possible start in life, and the support they and their families need to make equality of opportunity a reality, allowing each and every child to fulfil their potential.

Aiming High for Disabled Children is the transformation programme for disabled children’s services and is supported by substantial new funding and measures designed to make the system work better. The Government wants disabled children to be a priority, both nationally and locally: a commitment confirmed in the NHS Operating Framework and in the Children's Plan.

The key developments in the programme are:

  • Short breaks
  • Childcare
  • Transition support
  • Palliative care
  • Core Offer and National Indicator

Other areas of work will be in therapy services, communication, key working individual budgets and direct payments

Childcare
The Government wants families with disabled children to be able to access high quality childcare that helps children grow and fulfil their potential, and gives their parents the opportunity to work.

Short Breaks Project
We offer support to all children under the age of 18 years, who have been under assessed as needing Short Breaks support. Support may be required because the family are going through a particularly stressful time or it may be because a child has a disability and it is considered that the child and their family may benefit from Short Breaks involvement.
