Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

Genealogy

This database carries details of thousands of local people, compiled from local directories published between 1772 and 1845.

A local community is made up of the totality of people who live there, and this is no less true of the historic past. In human terms, the site will link the past and the present in a continuity of lives. In terms of access and listing this is a Contact Index designed to show the presence of an individual in the locality.

The certain knowledge of the existence of an individual in Stockport and district during the past can be the beginning of a search process that may reveal additional personal and family information.

It is intended for family historians and genealogists, local historians in search of figures from the past and anyone who wants to know who was who in Stockport. The occupation column of the database also yields a mass of social and economic information about social life and historical trades and industries.

The directory will eventually include biographical entries from all eras in Stockport's history, and only individuals known to be alive will be excluded.

Start to trace your family ancestors by using the genealogy database.

When you access the page please type in at least 3 letters of the surname for which you are searching.

Example: To find "Smith," you need only type "SMI." However, please note that this will also return results for "Smithson" and "Smithers." Please type surnames only.

About the Stockport Biography

This database is the first part of a long-term programme to provide a historical directory of people who once lived in Stockport. The information is compiled by Stockport Heritage Library, Central Library (part of the Stockport Council Library and Information Service).

The directory is intended for family historians and genealogists, local historians in search of figures from the past and anyone who wants to know who was who in Stockport. The occupation column of the database also yields a mass of social and economic information about social life and historical trades and industries. The directory will eventually include biographical entries from all eras in Stockport's history, and only individuals known to be alive will be excluded.

The information on the database has been compiled from a range of 21 local directories published between 1772 and 1845. Additional directories have been sequenced for future indexing. The database was launched in May 2002 with over 9000 rows of information, and this is being added to continually.

The column structure of the database includes (left to right): surname, forename(s), title, occupation/condition, address/citation, and date.

Additional sources of historic local information have been scheduled for future indexing, and the most important will include early rate books, and 19th century electoral registers.
