Applying for an Approved Premise Licence

Applying for Approval as a licensed venue for Civil Marriages & Civil Partnerships

The approval of venues for civil marriages and civil partnerships is granted by Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council.

Approval is subject to compliance with legislative requirements.

There are several different types of venue within the borough.The legislative criteria includes that a venue must be a permanent structure,providing seemly and dignified surroundings in which ceremonies can take place.

Additionally,the venue must be regularly available to the public for the solemnisation of civil marriages and civil partnerships (i.e. no ‘one-off’ applications are acceptable) and it must not have any recent or continuing religious connections.

These are the main legislative requirements but other criteria also apply.

An Approved Premise Licence lasts for 3 years and is renewable during the final year of approval. The current fee for a 3 year licence is £1200. The amount of the Approved Premise Licence fee is subject to annual review.
