Stockport Council’s Cemeteries Service is responsible for the management of cemeteries and churchyards in Stockport.
The service is managed as part of Environmental Health & Trading Standards within Public Protection in the Environment & Economy Directorate. Our main responsibilities include:
- Provision of burial spaces for coffins and ashes in both traditional and natural woodland settings
- Headstone safety inspections
- Grounds maintenance
- Provision of various memorialisation schemes including benches and plaques
The service does not provide for:
- The registration of deaths
- Bereavement Counselling
- Making funeral arrangements
- Financial assistance in cases where there are inadequate funds to pay for a funeral or cremation
- Research into family history
- Memorial masonry work
- Burials in churchyards
- Commonwealth War Graves Commission war grave headstones and war memorials.
Cemeteries Service is working to improve facilities and services throughout Stockport’s burial grounds. Our staff endeavour at all times to create a feeling of comfort and reverence in surroundings where relatives and friends of the departed may pay their respects in a setting of peace and tranquillity. However, many of our burial grounds are in need of refurbishment and Cemeteries Service is working in partnership with the Friends of Stockport Cemeteries (FOSC), the Co-operative Funeralcare and other partner agencies to implement long-term and lasting improvements throughout all the sites that we are responsible for.
