RIDDOR Accident / Incident Reports

If you are an employer, self-employed or in control of work premises you will have duties under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995.

RIDDOR requires you to report some work-related injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences. It applies to all work activities.

Accidents / incidents that are reportable come under the following categories:

  1. Deaths of employees or self employed occurring at work that are due to a work activity.
  2. Major injuries to employees or self employed occurring at work that are due to a work activity.
  3. Dangerous occurrences, specified in the regulations.
  4. Over 3-day injuries to employees or self employed that are due to a work activity. (the 3 day rule applies to all injuries that prevent someone doing their normal work for 3 days or more. The third day is the third consecutive 24 hour period after the accident. It includes any weekly time off such as weekends or off-shift periods.)
  5. Injuries to members of the public where they are taken directly to hospital from the scene of the accident, if the accident resulted from some form of work activity.
  6. Certain occupational diseases occurring due to work activity.
