Most recently, a new collection point at Stopford House has been opened as part of the Stockport Boost campaign. It is open between 1.00pm and 2.00pm every Tuesday at Stockport Direct at the south end of Stopford House on Piccadilly and is staffed mainly by Council employees on a voluntary basis.
What is it?
Stockport Credit Union Limited is a 'not for profit' community based savings and loans cooperative, which is owned and controlled by its members. It was formed in December 2005 when Brinnington, Houldsworth, Offerton and Werneth Credit Unions joined forces.
It is strictly regulated by the Financial Services Authority and offers safe and secure savings, plus affordable loans to anyone who lives or works in Stockport.
Credit unions are found all over the world and in some countries – Ireland and Canada, for example – they take their place on the high street alongside banks and other financial institutions. We’re still a young Credit Union in Stockport but we’ll get there!
Why should you join Stockport Credit Union?
Because credit unions are local and approachable; have services that meet your needs; are responsible lenders and invest in your community. Other benefits include:
- low rate of interest on loans
- free life assurance on savings and loans
- dividend on savings.
And your money is safe:
- Stockport Credit Union Limited is a member of the Association Of British Credit Unions Ltd (ABCUL).
- It is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) FSA Ref No 213305.
- Savings are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).
- The Credit Union is covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).
Who can join the Credit Union?
You can join Stockport Credit Union if you live or work anywhere in the borough of Stockport. You can apply for membership and pay in at any of our ‘collection points’ in Bredbury, Adswood, Brinnington, Offerton (Dialstone Centre), Reddish, Romiley, Woodley and the Town Centre.
