This is a national scheme, run by local Councils to help you pay your rent and Council Tax.
You can claim if you have a low income of any type. This includes people who work for an employer or who are self employed. Housing Benefit for tenants of private landlords is assessed under the Local Housing Allowance Scheme.
You cannot get Housing or Council Tax Benefit if you, and any partner have more than £16,000 in savings, unless you receive Guaranteed Pension Credit. You can get an idea of how much benefit you might be entitled to by using our online calculator.
How to apply
The preferred and easiest way to claim is to apply online using our Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit online application form.
You can pick up a paper form from Fred Perry House, Edward Street, Stockport, or any Stockport Direct Local Centre but please note, paper forms will not be looked at until at least 28 working days after they have been received in the office. We also offer a home visiting service to help you complete your application. To request a visit or a claim form, call the Benefits Section on the 0161 217 6015.
