Paralympic bronze medalists Matthew Walker and Jenny McLoughlin were among the athletes honoured at the town hall by The Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Wendy Meikle.

Torchbearers, Games Makers and Alan Newton, Stockport’s bronze medalist from the 1952 Olympic Games were also cheered on by scores of local residents at the special event.

The athletes then met with local people and schoolchildren before being presented with special trophies to mark their sporting achievements.

Councillor Sue Derbyshire, Leader of Stockport Council, said: “This summer, our Olympians, Paralympians, Games Makers and Torchbearers have made Stockport proud. Not only have they individually achieved a great deal, but they have also helped put Stockport on the map. They are all fantastic ambassadors for the borough and are an inspiration to our residents and communities.

“It was a fitting tribute to give them all a very warm welcome home and mark their great contribution to the borough.”
