Stockport Road Works Information

6th March–November: Otterspool Road, Romiley

United Utilities contractors have started works to install a new sewer outfall on Otterspool Road, Romiley, between the junctions with Vale Road and Hurstheads Lane.

These works are due to be completed by November 2014 and will require the use of temporary two-way signals for the duration of the works.


19th March–October: Dialstone Lane, Offerton

Contractors working on behalf of British Telecom have started preliminary diversionary works on relocating fibre optic cables on Dialstone Lane at the junction with Dial Road ahead of the United Utilities flood alleviation scheme.

The BT works will require the use of temporary two-way signals, staffed during peak periods, and side road junction closures of Dial Road and Magda Road for approximately three weeks.

Once the BT plant has been relocated, United Utilities contractors will take possession of the site under the same temporary two-way light traffic management and side road junction closure including Katherine Road and Hollymount Drive, to start the tunnelling operations associated with the installation of the new sewers.

It is expected that this scheme will take up to six months to complete.


7th July - 10th August: Temporary Road Closures

As part of our scheduled roads maintenance programme over the next few weeks Solutions SK will be undertaking works on our behalf at various sites across the borough including litter picking, grass cutting, tree pruning, carriageway / drainage and barrier repairs, road markings and street lighting repairs. The works will involve placement of temporary traffic management to protect the operatives whilst they undertake their individual tasks.

The works will be carried out as follows;

19th - 20th July:  A34 between A555 roundabout and Eden Place roundabout, temporary lane closures over Saturday and Sunday 7:00am – 5:00pm

21st - 25th July: Crookilley Way between M60 scissors Junction 26 and Portwood roundabout one way westbound traffic only overnight 10:00pm – 5:00am

26th - 27th July: A34 between Eden Place roundabout and Schools Hill roundabout, temporary lane closures over Saturday and Sunday 7:00am – 5:00pm

2nd - 3rd August: A34 between Schools Hill roundabout and the Manchester boundary, temporary lane closures over Saturday and Sunday 7:00am – 5:00pm

9th - 10th August: Tiviot Way between Lancashire Hill roundabout and Water Street junction, ROAD CLOSED 9:00am on 09/08 to 3:30pm on 10/08.


14th July – 1st August: Wilmslow Road, Cheadle

Contractors working on behalf of Stockport Council will be undertaking overnight resurfacing works on Wilmslow Road, Cheadle, from the junction with Gatley Road to the junction with Brooklyn Road. 

Works will take place overnight, from 6.30pm to 5.00am, and will require the use of temporary signals. 

In addition the Wilmslow Road junctions with Chapel Street and Brooklyn Road will be closed to traffic  while the works take place and both Chapel Street and Brooklyn Road have been made two-way to maintain access to properties, previously they were one-way.


14th July – 5th October: Manchester Road, Cheadle

Contractors working on behalf of Stockport Council will be undertaking major carriageway and footway improvement works on Manchester Road, Cheadle, between the junction with Mill Lane up to the border with Manchester at the River Mersey.

Works will require the use of two-way signals.


14th July – 5th August: Chester Road, Hazel Grove

Contractors working on behalf of National Grid Gas will be undertaking works to replace a gas main on Chester Road, Hazel Grove; between the junctions with Dean Lane and Wensley Drive.

Works will require the use of multi-way signals, at the junction with Dean Lane and Chester Road; which will temporarily replace the permanent signals. The remainder of the works will carried out with minimal disruption to the carriageway.


14th July - 5th August: Chester Road, Hazel Grove

Contractors working on behalf of National Grid Gas will be undertaking works to replace a gas main on Chester Road, Hazel Grove between the junctions with Dean Lane and Wensley Drive 14th July 2014 to 5th August 2014.

These works will require the use of multi-way signals, between 23rd July 2014 and 5th August 2014 at the junction with Dean Lane and Chester Road; which will temporarily replace the permanent signals. The remainder of the works will carried out with minimal disruption to the carriageway.


21st, 24th , 25th and 26th July: Manchester Road, Heaton Norris

Please be advised that contractors working on behalf of Stockport Council will be resurfacing the carriageway on Manchester Road, Heaton Norris following on from the footway and entrance works relating to the new retail development.

The Resurfacing is scheduled to take place overnight between 7pm and 1am. Traffic Signals will be in operation during this work.


23rd July – 6th August: Mile End Lane, Offerton

Stockport Council we will be resurfacing the final section of the carriageway on Mile End Lane from approximately Sandhurst Road to A6 Buxton Road. This work will be carried out by our alliance partner Lafarge/Tarmac Ltd.

The work involves removing the existing carriageway surface and applying a new road surface. Work is expected to take up to two weeks to complete, weather permitting.

To carry out this work it will be necessary to restrict traffic movements with a prohibition of driving (road closure) for through traffic on Mile End Lane 9.30am - 3.30pm  Monday to Friday. During this time a signed diversion will be in operation to minimise disruption and allow safe working operations to take place. Access to properties in the working zone will be maintained where possible but may be restricted for certain periods as the work progresses.

Information boards will be erected on site advising road users of the programmed work.


26th July 2014: Various roads, Stockport

The following roads in Stockport will be closed to traffic; for the Stockport Carnival.

  • Wharf Street full length
  • Sheffield Street full length
  • Short Street full length
  • Belmont Way from Short Street to Wellington Road North
  • Wellington Road North/Wellington Road South from Belmont Way to Edward Street
  • Edward Street full length
  • Waterloo Road full length
  • Spring Gardens from Waterloo Road to Hall Street
  • Hall Street from Spring Gardens to Turncroft Lane
  • Turncroft Lane from Hall Street to Brownwood Avenue

A rolling closure will be in place between 10am and 3pm; as per the attached route plan. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.


28th July to 30th July: Hulme Hall Road, Cheadle Hulme

Contractors working on behalf of British Telecom will be undertaking ducting works in the carriageway and building a chamber in the footway on Hulme Hall Road, Cheadle Hulme; between the junctions with Swann Lane and Barrington Avenue.

These works are scheduled to take place from Monday 28th July 2014 to Wednesday 30th July 2014 and will require the use of two way signals between 9:30am and 3:30pm.


28th July to 13th August: Kingsway (A34) and Wilmslow Road, Cheadle

Contractors working on behalf of Stockport Council will be undertaking footway improvement works on Kingsway (A34), from the junction with The Broadway,
around the Cheadle Royal Roundabout and on to Wilmslow Road up to the junction with Etchells Road.

The works will be undertaken during off-peak traffic periods (Monday to Friday, 9.30am – 3.30pm) with some weekend/overnight working. Temporary traffic management arrangements, lane closures and possibly two way signals, will be required to enable the works to be undertaken.


28th July - 29th August: Carriageway Resurfacing & Footway Repairs Moorland Road

Stockport Council will be resurfacing part of the carriageway and carrying out localised footway repairs on Moorland Road between approximately Woodsmoor Lane (A6 end) and Cedar Road.

This work will be carried out by our alliance partners J. Cooney Ltd & Lafarge/Tarmac Ltd. The first phase of the work is programmed to commence from 28th July 2014 carrying out footway repairs. Work is expected to take up to 4 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Unfortunately to carry out this work it will be necessary to restrict traffic movements with a prohibition of driving (road closure) for through traffic on Moorland Road from 9am to 5pm daily (Mon-Fri). During this time a signed diversion will be in operation to minimise disruption and allow safe working operations to take place.

  • Access to properties in the working zone will be maintained where possible but may be restricted for certain periods as the work progresses.
  • Residents directly affected have received a letter explaining the scope of the works and timescales involved.
  • Information boards will be erected on site advising road users of the programmed work.
  • Although some minor disruption is inevitable this will be kept to a minimum by our staff on site.


28th July to 29th August: Lower fold, Marple Bridge

  • Refurbishment work to Lower Fold Retaining Wall – Between the junctions with Compstall Road/Glossop Road and Pear Tree Close/Hogarth Road
    Works are scheduled to take place from 28th July 2014 for a period of 4 weeks. Temporary two way signals will be required from 28th July 2014 to 1st August 2014.The carriageway will then remain clear for the final 3 weeks.

  • Highway Drainage Repairs – At the junction with Waters Edge
    Works are scheduled to take place from 6th August 2014 to 8th August 2014 and require the use of two way signals, between the hours of 9.00am and 3.30pm only.

  • Pelican Crossing Upgrade to Puffin Crossing – Adjacent to Pear Tree Close/Hogarth Road junction
    Works are scheduled to take place from 28th July 2014 for a period of 4 weeks.  Temporary two way signals will be required for certain stages of the work from 11th August 2014 to 17th August 2014, 9.00am to 4.00pm only.  The carriageway will remain clear outside of these dates.


17th August: Gorton Road, Reddish

Contractors will be working on a telecoms mast on Gorton Road, Reddish near the junction with Ashbrook Lane on Sunday 17th August 2014, between 9am and 4pm. The works will require the use of multi-way signals.


3rd – 15th August: Stockport Road, Marple

Contractors working on behalf of Stockport Council are undertaking manhole construction work outside 183/185 Stockport Road, Marple (between The Drive and Cross Lane). The works are scheduled to take place from the 3rd August to the 15th August 2014 and will require temporary two-way signals.


4th August – 5th September: Church Lane, Marple

Contractors working on behalf of Stockport Council will be undertaking culvert repairs on Church Lane, Marple, between the junctions with Church Street and Brickbridge Lane.  As the majority of the work is located within the footway there will mostly be no impact on the carriageway.  However, during stages of the works two-way signals will be required between the hours of 8.00am to 5.00pm only.
