Stockport Council Backs National Heart Month

08 Feb 2010

Stockport Council is backing the British Heart Foundation’s National Heart Month campaign which runs throughout February.

National Heart Month aims to increase awareness of heart and circulatory disease throughout the UK and encourages people to be active, eat healthily and avoid smoking in order to reduce the risk of illness.

Cllr John Pantall, Executive Member for Adults & Health at Stockport Council said:  “We are working with all of our partners in Stockport to work towards a healthier borough, and as part of that we are pleased to support British Heart Foundation’s National Heart Month. Staying active plays a big part in keeping your heart healthy along with helping to achieve a healthy weight.  Our Active Stockport campaign helps residents find out how they can fit more physical activity into their daily lives.”

Cllr John Smith, Executive Member for Leisure at Stockport Council added:  “Through the Active Stockport campaign we are committed to giving our residents as many opportunities as possible to get fitter and healthier.  By supporting National Heart Month and encouraging our residents to get more active in 2010 we are able to further promote the health benefits that exercise and a healthy lifestyle can provide.”

Shirley McNally, Fundraising Manager for the British Heart Foundation in Stockport, said: "We are delighted that Stockport Council is supporting our Red for Heart campaign and helping us in our fight to beat the UK's biggest killer. Sadly heart and circulatory disease claims around 200,000 lives each year and every six minutes someone dies from a heart attack.

"We all need to take steps to ensure we lead a healthy life as possible and it is great to see the Council is encouraging residents to do this."
