Council Scoops Top Environmental Award

20 Sep 2009

Stockport Council has won a much sought after award for environmental excellence for the sixth year in a row.

The Council has scooped a Green Apple Environment Award for the highly successful Environment Fair held this summer for World Environment Day.

The event was organised by the Council led by Environmental Services, Sustainability, Regeneration and Housing Strategy. Stalls were set up to provide information and giveaways about recycling, composting, saving water, energy efficiency and Fair Trade.

It was the first time an event like this had been held in Stockport Town Centre.

Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, Executive Member for the Environment, said: “The Environment Fair held in June was a really successful and well attended event, which provided residents with useful information on how to become even greener. I would like to congratulate everyone who was involved in this event which is a very worthy winner of the prestigious Green Apple Award.” The Council will be presented with the Green Apple Award at the House of Commons later this year.

The Green Apple Awards are now in their sixteenth year and attracted more than 500 nominations this year.

They are organised by the Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non- activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
