Walking Buses can be a great way to encourage more walking to school. A walking bus is led by an adult ‘Bus Driver’ and has a number of adult ‘conductors’, who pick up children at designated ‘bus stops’ on a set route. This is great for pupils who live near to the school but whose parents can’t always walk to school with them. The route will be risk assessed and adults who walk with the pupils will be road safety trained and CRB-checked (Criminal Record Bureau). Both pupils and adults will wear a fluorescent/reflective tabard.Schools are advised to set up the scheme just once or twice a week at first to gauge the success, and then to expand later. Junior pupils can be part of the Junior Bus Conductor scheme. Walking Buses can also improve a school’s punctuality and attendance levels. For further information/advice about how to set up a walking bus contact the School Travel Co-ordinator - see 'Related Contacts' on the right of the page.
