Hollywood ParkHollywood Park is west of the town centre and in close proximity to the bus station. The park can be easily seen from the railway viaduct and Town Hall. The park has a lit through way to the town centre. It covers an area of 12 acres. With its formal structure and topography it is an unusual town park and acts as a vital area of greenspace for the local community. The layout of terraces and steps is this 110 year old park’s chief characteristic. The park has a committed community group HEART (Hollywood Environmental Action Residents Team) who have been supporting the park since 1999 by raising awareness, holding community events, fundraising and work days. History Hollywood Park is a late Victorian urban park and the second oldest park in Stockport, officially opened on June 3rd 1893. The park was the brainchild of a local manufacturer, John McClure. McClure owned Travis Brook Mill that lay only 300 yards across the River Mersey. One of his aims was to provide “higher pleasures than the beer house or gin shop”. The greater part of the land was acquired on 10th August 1889 for the price of £7,123.00 with subsequent purchases during 1890, 1891 and 1892. The upper, terraced, area was laid out as a conventional Victorian park with the usual walkways, formal flowerbeds and bowling greens. The lower portion of the park was probably used as a playing field, as it is today, although McClure’s original idea was to use this area for a public baths. In 1934 an Art Deco brick bowling pavilion was erected. It was an attractive and unusual building in that the majority of parks pavilions up and down the country were built much earlier and to a different design. This building was repeatedly vandalised and demolished in 2002. The town’s fair was held at this park for over 70 years until 2002. Facilities
