The responsibility for drains and sewers is quite complex and can be confusing. Sewage is removed from your home via a network of pipes, which may be public or private ownership. The large sewers that are normally situated under the road are usually maintained by the sewage undertaker and are known as public sewers. United Utilities are the sewage undertaker for Stockport. To contact United Utilities telephone 0845 602 0406, or see 'Related Links' on the right. If a sewer is not in public ownership then it is private. Stockport Council's Drainage Section are available to offer advice to residents experiencing problems with private drains. The section has enforcement powers to deal with private drain problems in cases where the responsible persons do not carry out necessary works. To contact the Drainage section, see 'Related Contacts' on the right. The Streetscene Operations Section constructs and repairs surface water sewers and carries out maintenance and repairs to various watercourses, culverts and highway gullies. The section also has a dedicated team of staff keeping the borough's highway gullies cleaned, which amounts to over 90,000 gullies emptied every year. To contact Streetscene, see 'Related Contacts' on the right.
